Book is full of cryptic explanations and example problems that do nothing to clarify the mechanics of the concepts at work. Tedious and difficult to understand...

This textbook is terrible. First week of a online stat class and I'm already pulling my hair out. Book will not teach you anything, it is terrible written. Had to resort to google to understand even week one concepts........ good luck, if you are like me and you have no choice but to buy this book.

Very bad, avoid if possible.
Does not explain thoroughly, skips steps that are explained in earlier chapters and does not reference whats being skipped

If you can avoid this book, do it at all costs. This book is a disgrace to the subject it purports to teach. Giving examples like "you can apply this particular concept in situations X, Y, Z" is neither a proof nor an explanation.

This book is not good at all. The authors should be ashamed of this effort. The content coverage methodology is illogical and the explanations are simply bad.
I have an M.S. in a related field....if I didn't already know the information supposedly covered in this text I would be lost.

If you can ask your teacher to change books do it. This book is a s*** show of bad examples and terribly confusing examples that feature no numbers to prove a concept and it does not help that the class itself is hard to grasp.

Horribly written textbook. As others have mentioned, the examples they use, to help with exercises, are of not help. If you can, avoid. I've had to resort to googling and finding better examples online to supplement my studying.

This book is probably the worst textbook I have ever used. The examples in each section barely help with the exercises. I would recommend just using the internet to learn statistics.

What to make of these reviews
It's clear that there are students who have difficulties with this book, and you need to remember this is an essential textbook for Statistics 1 and 2. The reason why these reviews are important is because they will help you understand why LSE professors advise students to make sure they have access to both essential and further reading textbooks. No single textbook is perfect in explaining concepts, including essential textbooks. You need further reading textbooks, so that if essential textbook does not explain a concept clearly, you can study the same concept from a further reading textbook. Unfortunately, most students use essential textbooks and skip further reading textbooks that ends up limiting their grades. See the
advice from LSE professors against this practice here
